One of the big advantages is that our courses are tutor-led. Learners don’t just come to the centre and sit alone at a PC to do an on-line course. Whilst this might suit some people, it isn’t for everybody, and having the support of a tutor throughout the course really benefits the learners who use the Training Centre.

Class sizes are kept small (6-8 people). This works really well for me as a tutor and for the learners, as I can offer the support individuals need to succeed in the course.

The length of the courses varies, depending on which one the learner chooses. Some are spread over 5 sessions (morning or afternoon) per week over a period of 2 months, where others are much shorter.

The majority of work is undertaken whilst at the Training Centre, during the teaching sessions, but, depending on which course is chosen, the learner may have some study to complete at home as preparation for the next session. We often find that learners want to practice what they have learnt in class when they get home even if no work is set!

Courses are assessed either by the tutor (as a marker for the British Computer Society) or by an external examining board such as City and Guilds or OCR. Tutors appreciate that it can be quite scary to be sitting an assessment if the learner has had a break from the learning environment so they ensure that learners feel well prepared with lots of practice assessments before sitting the real thing.

Of course! Many learners sign up to one course and enjoy it so much that they sign up for more. The course prices here are a lot lower than in other places and people really relax into learning in this very friendly environment.

Whether someone is looking to return to work or re-train, it can be quite daunting for some people to just throw themselves into the learning or work environment. We find that a lot of people really gain confidence when they complete a course here, and feel skilled and confident enough afterwards to go on either to higher-level learning or back into the workplace.

We have excellent pass rates and fully support learners throughout their course. At this particular Training Centre (AFF has another centre in Blandford which may re-open) learners have the added bonus of an AFF Employment Advisor on-site. She can help with job searches, so learners looking for work are further supported in that way.
